Athens' Newspaper Teams Up With Yahoo!

This week the Athens Banner-Herald announced that they have joined a consortium to give readers and advertisers more access to the powerful suite of Yahoo! tools.

The consortium consists of 270 newspapers in 45 states that now exists as "the biggest partnership of its type in newspaper publishing history," according to the April 17 article. The partnership gives advertisers the opportunity to reach a much wider audience and readers better access to local information.

A key component of the deal is that local Internet users will be able to view local story headlines and local advertisements across almost all of Yahoo!'s content pages. Also, they will have access to Yahoo's powerful utilities, including e-mail and messenger services. In addition, those story headlines also will appear on Yahoo!'s mobile service, called Yahoo Go. The article goes on to say that together, the Banner-Herald and Yahool! will have up to 75% of the Athens Internet market locked up.

The perks of the deal lie largely in advertising as Yahoo! is now able to sell national advertising on local papers' Web sites while local advertisers can opt to have their ads appear on Yahoo's site. For the Banner-Herald, they can now have the power of Yahoo's search engine added to their site.

LEAD Athens

Last night I graduated from LEAD Athens, a leadership development program with the mission to develop effective leaders committed to building a vibrant community. The year long program consisted of orientation, a retreat and eight day-long programs each with a focus on a particular topic such as local government, economic development, education, etc. and a group project.

My group members and I chose to focus on economic development for our project as we conducted a business climate study with local retailers. For the project, we polled 200 locally-owned businesses and conducted a focus group. The video we presented at our graduation won "best picture."

LEAD Athens was a great program, not only did I meet some really great people but I learned so much about our community. I reccomend it to anyone interested in Athens and learning more about all that it has to offer.

TIME Magazine reported this week that CitiBank unveiled a new product that enables users to bank by phone. The free service, called Citi Mobile, allows customers to pay bills, check account balances and transfer funds, regardless of which wireless carrier they use.

According to CitiBank's Web site, Citi Mobile "is a convenient, secure, and easy-to-use service that lets you do your day-to-day banking on your mobile phone. You can use it to pay bills, transfer money, see your balances and activity, find a Financial Center or ATM and connect directly to Customer Service—right from your cell phone."

While Wachovia and Bank of America have recently come out with similar offerings, Citi Mobile is the first downloadable mobile banking service offered by a major bank in the U.S. Citi Mobile has been designed to work on a wide range of phones across several U.S. wireless carriers.

The service is currently available now in southern California and plans to expand nationwide this summer.

As the popularity of mobile Web access grows, more and more sites are being built to properly display on the "small screens."

.mobi has just been released as a new domain extension for sites built exclusively for mobile viewing. The new top level domain will feature content formatted for mobile devices.

Within hours of the opening of registration, thousands of Web sites signed up to get in on the latest fad. The .mobi domain name aims to create a new experience of browsing the internet on mobile devices.

A .mobi domain name does not come cheap. A .mobi trademark name costs $140 and a generic one generally starts at $45 a year, compared with about $10 a year for a typical .com name.
