I've got a birthday coming up so on the advice of Colin, I typed it into the Wikipedia and found out all kinds of interesting things about September the 4th.

Geotagging at Flickr

So our flickr feeds are broken temporarily since flickr updated their app to include geotagging. Now, you can actually place on a map the location you took a photo. Pretty cool since you could then, say, check out all of the photos taken around Athens, GA by browsing a map.

Google's been busy...

If you haven't gotten the new Google Notifier you should go get it now. Not just for Gmail anymore, it keeps you aware of what's happening on your Google Calendar too.

Probably the bigger news is Google Apps for Your Domain. Basically, this means you can get the power of Gmail and Google Calendar to run specific to your domain. Instead of having your @gmail.com address, with Google Apps you could have Gmail power your @yourcompany.com email address. You can do the same with Google Calendar. Only users in your company sharing a private calendar hosted by Google.

For a lot of small businesses (plexus included) this is an appealing alternative to Exchange.

Wow. The Oregon State University Linux Users Group created this Firefox crop circle. Ok, how cool is that? And, how do you make a crop circle? :)

More information & Photos

Oh yeah, and if you haven't already, get Firefox.

iStock... video?

A few days ago iStockphoto announced their new service, iStockvideo.

iStockvideo is a spinoff of the wildly popular user-driven stock photography site, iStockphoto.

With the recent explosion of video on the Internet thanks to Flash's recently added video support and the market penetration of broadband, I see no reason this site won't be as successful and easy to use as iStockphoto.

Web site, web site or website?

Well, I see all three versions pretty consistently. And truthfully I do see website more than any of the other two.

So, I looked it up in the AP Style Guide and here is the relevant entry.

Web
AP style requires the use of a capital letter when referring to the World Wide Web: Web site, the Web, Web page.

Who cares? Well, since the phrase We Build Web Sites is such a big part of our identity I thought I should get to the bottom of it when Kim asked me this morning.

There is also someone amongst us using the "website" spelling.

Complicated Doesn't Make It Good

I love the title of this book.

It's a book about the basics of design, targeted toward grade school children. Even so, it contains many design fundamentals that a professional would even find useful.

It is also written by Mark Gonyea, the brother of our resident flash/poker expert Michael Gonyea.

Mark, like Michael, is an extremely creative artist. He is also the creator of Mr. Oblivious, a great cartoon strip.

Good Flag, Bad Flag

A neat primer (for anyone in visual design) on flag design that includes examples and comparisons of good flags and bad flags.

Georgia's flag is not bad flag but contains the state seal which is meaningless and difficult to discern from any kind of distance. South Carolina on the other hand has a great flag. Simple, basic, easy to distinguish from great distances.
