On the Web, information can be found on just about anything, and the rising popularity of blogs (or Web logs) is making it that much easier. Blogging is the latest rage in Web communication. In case you are not yet familiar, Wikipedia defines it as “often providing commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics or local news, while some function as more of a personal online diary.”
As open forums, blogs are powerful tools for distributing information in a new and different way. A typical blog may combine text, images and links to other blogs, Web pages, and various media related to its topic. A blog also can be used as a complimentary component on a Web site as an additional way to provide information.
Blogs enable anyone to engage in open dialogue. Consider the launch of a new product or service. Coupled with the traditional media you would use to alert the public, blogs offer a more in-depth option to communicate the news.
Or, maybe you are interesting in learning more about a political issue and participate in a blog instead of reading an online article. Blogging offers a more interactive experience with dialogue back and forth.
At Plexus, we’ve been blogging for some time now. Each staff member has their own running blog where postings range from pop culture, movies, television, music, etc., to actual work-related topics such as Search Engine Optimization, new offerings from Google, XHTML codes and useful links.
In addition to opening up a discussion among the staff members, it invites clients and visitors to our site to engage in the topics that are discussed. And, the words used in our blogs helps to increase the searchability of our site. Take for instance, a topic the Plexus crew has blogged about, Ruby on Rails, the development system we use. If you were to conduct a Google search for “ruby on rails, Athens, Ga” Plexus comes up as the sixth listing on the first page – increasing our ability to get in front of potential customers.
Consider the power of the blog for your business or organization. Could it be useful for you or your employees to share information with each other, potential customers and others? Could it serve as an additional vehicle to drive traffic to your Web site? Or, is it simply an activity you could engage in to increase your own knowledge base?
