If you're like me and have struggled for hours trying to figure out how to shrink someone else's PDF files without access to the original, you're in luck (as long as you're running Mac OSX): Just open the offending PDF in Preview, save as JPEG (slide the quality down to "Least" for greater reduction in file size) Save your new JPEG as a PDF (also with Preview)...

For all you out there who need to create PDF's just download PDF995. 995 is the price - yes that is $9.95! After installing it, it shows up as a printer. Just click Print, and choose pdf995 and it will print to a pdf instead of to a printer. go to www.pdf995.com to download a shareware version - you might get annoyed by the ads and then decide $9.95 is pretty cheap.

Several times in the last few months, I've needed a way to combine two PDF files into one. I don't have the full version of Acrobat on my machine, and using Photoshop to do it is more hassle than it's worth, so I found this freeware utility that does the job handily: pdftk
